CHICO -- Extra innings weren't kind to No. 24 Cal State Dominguez Hills as host Chico State took a pair of extra-inning walk-off wins to sweep the CCAA series, a three-game set truncated by weather.
Kianna Abellera knocked four hits on the afternoon to lead the offense as the Toros dipped to 23-13 overall, and 10-9 CCAA. More importantly, CSUDH fell from 3rd to 5th in the CCAA, just half a game ahead of 6th place Chico State with the top six teams qualifying for the league's postseason tournament and just three weekends left in the regular season.
The opener saw the Toros take the lead in the 2nd after Abellera brought home
Kaylee Hull, who doubled to lead off the frame.
Chico State tied the contest in the bottom of the 4th, where it remained through regulation. In the bottom of the 8th, however, the Wildcats capitalized on a pair of singles to lead off the frame and an infield error, with an ensuing single bringing home the game-winner.
The hosts took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning in the nightcap, until an
Alani Nguyen sacrifice fly in the 5th and a
Raquel Jaime bases-loaded walk tied the game in the 6th, with
Maiya Lopez bringing home
Faith Hernandez in the 7th to give the Toros a 3-2 lead.
The Wildcats, however, capitalized on another Toro error in the bottom half of the 7th to tie the game after the leadoff hitter reached base with a single.
Both pitching staffs kept the opposing offenses off the board until the bottom of the 11th when the Wildcats loaded the bases with one out. A come-backer induced a force play at home for the second out, but the next batter singled to the pitcher to bring home the game-winner, giving Chico its second walk-off in as many games, and third one-run win over the Toros this weekend.
Nguyen and Lopez each knocked two hits in the loss, CSUDH's fourth in its past five games.
The Toros return home next weekend to host Cal State Monterey Bay, with Friday's first pitch set for 1 pm on Toro Diamond.
