Toro Offense Stymied in 1-0 Walk-Off Loss at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK -- The adage "leadoff walks always score" came true this afternoon as Cal State Dominguez Hills walked Sonoma State's leadoff hitter in the 9th inning of a scoreless game, and he came around to score on a walk-off single to left as the Seawolves took game two of the four-game CCAA set in a 1-0 decision today on an overcast afternoon at Santa Rosa Junior College's Sypher Field.

Toro starter Zach Geiss took the tough loss after tossing 8.0 innings of four-hit ball, with the second walk he issued proving to be the difference.

The Toros went quietly in the first two innings before Miguel Marin walked and Andrew Buglino singled to start the 3rd inning.  A strikeout, flyout and fielder's choice, however, saw the visitors come up empty.

CSUDH didn't get its next hit until the 7th when Scott Ogrin began the frame with a single on the first pitch he saw.  But a strikeout sandwiched between two fly balls kept the game scoreless.

That's where it remained until SSU employed small ball to push the game's only run across in the 9th, using a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt, ground out and single to plate the winning run.

Geiss fanned four and walked two in the loss, netting a total of 96 pitches.

Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, today's opener was pushed to 2:30 pm due to field prep from last night's rain, with the nightcap being canceled.
