ROHNERT PARK -- Sophomore
Vincent Temesvary scored thrice and went deep in today's opener at Sonoma State, but the host Seawolves put across four runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a come-from-behind win over Cal State Dominguez Hills to begin the four-game CCAA series.
The Toros now have dropped four of their last five, falling to 15-15 overall, and 10-10 in league play, and dip into a tie for 5th place in the CCAA standings with the top six teams qualifying for the CCAA Tournament, taking place during the second week of May.
CSUDH started hot with
Anthony Accordino bringing home Temesvary with the game's first run in the top of the first, before
Aaron Greenfield added two more with a 2RBI double down the left field line.
SSU, however, knotted the score with one in its 2nd inning at-bat and two in the 3rd, before the Toros reclaimed the lead in the 5th, courtesy of an
Emilio Barrera RBI knock to left, bringing home Temesvary.
That's where the score stood until the bottom of the 8th when the Seawolves strung together three singles and a HBP to bring in the tying run and chase Toro reliever
Josh Castillo, with reliever
Sam Gomez giving up a 2RBI single to the first batter he faced.
Gomez, however, induced a double play on the next batter with the bases loaded to bring in the final run of the frame, before fanning the final batter of the inning on three pitches to escape the jam.
Temesvary gave the Toros hope in their final at-bat with a two-out solo bomb to make it 7-5, but
Scott Ogrin grounded out to send SSU home with the win.
Eight different Toros banged a hit in the setback, with Castillo credited with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year.
The two teams play two tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for a 12 noon start.
