Box Score 2 CARSON -- Forced to play extra innings to open today's twinbill hosting No. 10 Sonoma State, Cal State Dominguez Hills catcher
Maiya Lopez stepped to the plate to open the bottom of the 9th and didn't like the first pitch she saw. Disgusted, she turned on it and sent it over the center field wall to give the host Toros a wild 3-2 walk-off win to start the four-game set.
In the nightcap, however, SSU mercied the Toros by a 12-1 count in 5.0 innings to split the Friday twinbill.
With the split, CSUDH stays in 4th place in the CCAA standings, 1.5 games behind Cal State San Marcos and 2.5 games ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay with two games left to play in the regular season.
The opening game had all the feels of a postseason showdown, with Toro starter
Alyssa Olague fanning four of the first six batters she faced. With the game scoreless, the hosts broke through in the bottom of the 2nd inning as
Kianna Abellera stroked a double down the right field line to bring home a pair of runs.
After Olague fanned two more in the 3rd inning, the Seawolves broke through in the 4th to tie the game at 2-2.
That's where the score remained until the 9th when Lopez ended the contest for the thrilling walk-off.
Jay Ross stroked two of the Toros seven hits in the game as SSU committed three errors.
In the nightcap, it was all SSU as they took a 4-1 lead in the 4th before scoring seven in the 5th to put the game away and invoke the mercy run rule after failing to score in their at-bat.
The two teams conclude the regular season tomorrow morning, with game one set for an 11 am first pitch. Prior to game one, CSUDH will honor its two seniors in
Raquel Jaime and
Alyssa Olague in a pre-game ceremony.
