Box Score 2 CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills combo of starter
Alyssa Olague (pictured) and reliever
Sara Bhatt held visiting Cal State Monterey Bay to just three hits as the Toros used a solo home run by
Kaylee Hull in the 4th inning to take a 1-0 win over the Otters to begin Saturday's doubleheader at Toro Diamond.
The Otters, however, capitalized on two Toro base-running errors and lucked out on their own base-running blunder to eek out a 3-2 win in the nightcap to split the key league series.
The two teams combined for just four hits over the first 3.5 innings of play to open the day, when Hull battled Otter starter Cassie Gasper for seven pitches, before belting the eighth pitch deep over the center field fence.
That proved good enough for the game as Bhatt entered in the 6th inning and shut down the CSUMB offense, allowing just one hit while picking up the save.
The nightcap was another pitchers duel for the first 2.5 innings, with the Toros breaking through in the 3rd.
In that frame,
Maiya Lopez belted an opposite field shot over the right center field fence for her first homerun of the year, before
Alex Davis singled to center to bring home
Mia Ayala, who walked after Lopez's blast.
The Otters, however, matched CSUDH's output in the 4th to tie the game at 2-2.
CSUDH had a chance to take the lead in the 5th as
Jay Ross stroked a 2-out single to right. After Davis walked,
Raquel Jaime sent a line drive that looked to reach the outfield, but Otter shortstop speared it with an all-out dive and threw behind Ross, who had taken a wide turn around third base and was hung out to dry for the final out of the inning.
That proved pivotal as the Otters were fortunate in their 6th-inning at-bat. With pinch-runner Faith Soriano on second base, Oli Perez lined a double to right field to send Soriano home, but Soriano stumbled halfway between third base and home plate.
The relay from right field, however, made its way to third base to prevent a would-be insurance run from reaching the bag, allowing Soriano to come home unscathed.
CSUDH had one final chance to tie in the bottom of the 7th after
Rianna De La Barcena pinch-ran for Lopez, who was plunked to begin the frame.
After a sacrifice bunt moved De La Barcena to second base, pinch-hitter
Kianna Abellera stepped to the plate and sent a shot up the middle. Monterey Bay shortstop Perez fielded the sure single and faked a throw to first base, which prompted De La Barcena to break for third and eventually get caught in a rundown.
Davis belted two hits in the loss, which keeps the Toros in 5th place in the CCAA standings, with two weekend left in the regular season.
This is the seventh-straight game which has been decided by one run, with the Toros going 2-5 during that stretch.
CSUDH travels to Stanislaus State next weekend for a crucial four-game CCAA series, with Friday's first pitch of game one starting at 1 pm.
