Box Score 2 IRVINE -- Runs were at a premium this afternoon as No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills took on No. 9 Concordia University Irvine in a rematch of last year's NCAA West Regional, with the Toros salvaging a split by taking a 2-0 decision in the nightcap after suffering a 2-0 setback in the opener.
The defense rode the arms of starter
Ashley Wies,
Sara Bhatt, and
Alyssa Olague,Ā and the bats of
Raquel Jaime and
Kaylee Hull (pictured), the latter who belted her third home run of the weekend, a solo shot in the 4th.
After falling 2-0 in the opener, runs continued to be scarce as the teams were scoreless after two innings of play.Ā In the third inning, however, CSUDHĀ pushed through after
Alex Davis started the rally with a one-out double.Ā After CUI retired the next hitter,
Raquel Jaime traded places with Davis with a double of her own to give the Toros their first lead, and run, of the afternoon.
An inning later, Hull was at it again, taking a low off-speed offering and sending it over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead and her third home run of the weekend.
That proved to be plenty for the Toro trio,Ā who teamed to limit the Golden Eagles to just six hits and no runs,Ā just the third time this year CUI had been blanked, all by 2-0 counts.
BhattĀ did her best impression of Houdini in the 6th inning, wiggling out of a bases-loaded, no out jam, courtesy of two force plays at home and a fielder's choice that endedĀ CUI's threat.
OlagueĀ then entered with a runner on in the bottom of the 7th and proceeded to retire the three batters she faced to pick up the save, her third of the year.
The opener was another pitcher's duel, with Concordia on the right side of the 2-0 decision.
The Toros managed just five hits on the day, including two by the red-hot Hull, as CUI's Rae Flores, Katlin Entrup and Daniela Alvarez teamed for the shutout.
CSUDH resumes CCAA play next weekend, traveling to Chico State for a four-game set, starting Friday at 1 pm on the Wildcat Softball Field.
