Toros Stifled in Sweep at Hands of Cal Poly Pomona

CARSON -- Five proved unlucky for Cal State Dominguez Hills this afternoon as visiting Cal Poly Pomona posted 5-3 and 5-2 wins over the Toros on a cool yet sunny day at Toro Field.

Anthony Accordino drove home four of the five runs for the hosts today that included a pair of doubles to lead the offensive effort.

The opener saw CPP starter Caleb Reyes handcuff the hosts, limiting the Toros to just two hits in 8.0 innings of work.  Once he finally gave way to the CPP pen after 85 pitches and a 5-0 lead, the Toros found success against reliever Eric Romo as leadoff hitter Eric Smelko greeted him with a single through the right side, which Aaron Greenfield followed with an infield single to short.

After reigning CCAA Player of the Week Vincent Temesvary was plunked to load the bases, Scott Ogrin spoiled the shutout bid with a sacrifice fly for CSUDH's first run, which also moved Greenfield to third base.

With Temesvary moving to second on a wild pitch, Accordino then belted a double down the right field line to score two and make it a 5-3 ballgame.

After Emilio Barrera was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, CPP went to its pen again and this time it delivered by retiring the final two Toros faced in the 5-3 win.

Starter Zach Geiss was saddled with the hard-luck loss after going 4.1 innings, allowing just one earned run as his defense committed a pair of errors behind him.

Pomona again started fast with a pair of runs in the nightcap, but the Toros answered just as fast with two in their bottom half of the inning, courtesy of another 2RBI double from Accordino.

The visitors, however, had the final say, scoring once in the 5th and twice in the 6th for the final tally.

Toro starter Dane Baker lasted just 4.2 innings to take the loss.

The two teams conclude their series tomorrow at noon at Toro Field.
