Toros Sweep Golden Eagles Behind Smelko's 7-for-8, 7 Run, 5 RBI Effort

CARSON -- Centerfielder Eric Smelko enjoyed a 5-for-5 performance at the plate with five runs scored and three RBI in game one and followed that with a 2-for-3 effort with two runs and two RBI and a monstrous home run in the nightcap as Cal State Dominguez Hills' offense exploded in 16-7 and 8-2 wins over crosstown rival Cal State LA on a cool Saturday afternoon.

In addition to CSUDH's 24 runs scored, the Toro bats knocked 18 hits while taking the first three-of-four from CSULA.

The Toros improve to 8-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in CCAA play, while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-8, 0-3 CCAA.

The opener was all CSUDH as the Toros scored thrice in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th innings, before a 2-spot in the 7th and five in the 8th to put the game away.

Aaron Greenfield added a 3-for-4 effort with three RBI and two runs scored, with Vincent Temesvary going 2-for-3 with four RBI in the rout.

Zach Geiss improved to 2-0 after 6.0 innings of work, allowing just one earned run as CSUDH's defense committed four errors behind him.

The nightcap looked to be more competitive as the teams were tied at 1-1 after 2.5 innings of play.  In the 3rd, however, CSUDH replied with four runs, the big blow coming on an Emilio Barrera 2RBI double down the left field line.

After CSULA scraped across a run in the 6th, Smelko put any doubts to rest about the outcome by hammering an inside fastball well over the right field fence for his third home run of the year.

Julian Diaz picked up the win after tossing 6.0 innings, fanning six against just two walks.

The two teams wrap up the four-game set tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12 noon on Toro Field.
