CARSON -- One day after being selected to the 2023 Tucci/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year watchlist, senior
Alyssa Olague lived up to the hype by tossing a complete-game shutout, scattering eight hits en route to a 6-0 win over visiting Biola to open this afternoon's non-conference twinbill, before the Toros scored five in the 1st inning en route to an 8-3 nightcap win to sweep the Eagles.
Kaylee Hull supplied the muscle with a solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd in the opener and a 2-run shot in the nightcap.
The opening game was scoreless after nine outs, until the Toros broke through in the bottom of the 2nd inning. In the frame,
Maiya Lopez began the run scoring with an RBI single to right field, with
Alyssa Yslas following suit with an RBI single to center.
Raquel Jaime then followed with a bases-loaded walk on four pitches to bring home the third run of the inning, before Hull flexed for a 4-0 lead in the 4th.
Two innings later,
Alexus Corona brought hom
Alex Davis before Jaime made it 6-0 with a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.
Olague was efficient in moving to 7-4, retiring the side in order to begin the game and not allowing a runner to reach second base until the top of the 7th when she was greeted with a single and double to put runners on second and third with none out.
Olague, however, buckled down by fanning the next batter she faced, and retiring the next two on groundouts to finish what she started.
The senior righty fanned eight Eagle batters without allowing a walk as part of her 108-pitch effort.
After the Eagles scored twice of Toro starter
Ashley Wies to open game two, CSUDH answered with five, the big blows coming on RBI knocks by Hull,
Nayah Pola, a bases-loaded walk from Lopez, a BU error and fielder's choice from
Alexus Corona that brought home Davis for the final run of the frame.
Up 5-3 entering the bottom of the 5th, CSUDH got that run back on a
Faith Hernandez RBI single in the 5th, before Hull's 2-run oppo shot put the game away an inning later.
Sara Bhatt picked up the win after tossing 2.2 innings in relief of Wies, fanning two and allowing one earned run.
Hull finished with three RBI and a 3-for-3 effort, with Pola contributing a 2-for-4 outing in the win.
CSUDH travels to No. 9 Concordia in what could be an NCAA West Region preview, with first pitch of tomorrow's twinbill set for 12 noon.
