CARSON -- No. 22 Cal State Dominguez Hills awoke from an opening game offensive slumber to take an 8-1 win in the nightcap over visiting Cal State East Bay behind
Alani Nguyen's 3-for-4, 3-run, 2-RBI performance and
Ashley Wies' (pictured) complete-game 3-hitter.
With the win, CSUDH takes 3-of-4 from the Pios and improve to 18-9 overall and 10-6 in the CCAA.
Wies was dominant in the circle in the late game, limiting the Pios to just three hits while fanning four batters on just 81 total pitches.
She retired the order in order in four of her seven frames, with CSUEB scoring its lone run in the 5th after a Toro error.
Offensively, the Toros scored their first run of the afternoon in the 3rd, with
Kaylee Hull singling to the pitcher to bring home the game's first run. After a wild pitch brought home Nguyen,
Alex Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to center for the third run of hte game.
After the Pios scored their run in the 5th,
Maiya Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk in the 5th to make it 4-1, with
Sydney Diaz lacing the first pitch she saw to left center to bring home two more runs.
Nguyen capped the scoring in the 6th with a 2-run blast, a liner over the left-center field fence.
Raquel Jaime also belted three hits in the game as the Toros avenged their opening game loss emphatically.
In a drastic offensive turnaround from yesterday's sweep, the Toro bats fell silent in the opener, managing just five hits in the 1-0 loss. CSUDH had its best chance to put across a run in the 2nd inning after consecutive two-out singles by Lopez and
Kianna Abellera. CSUEB, however, induced a ground out on
Alyssa Yslas to quell the would-be Toro rally.
CSUEBÂ looked to open the scoring in the 5th after the first two batters of the inning reached base, knocking Toro starter
Alyssa Olague from the game. Reliever
Sara Bhatt, however, was more than up to the challenge as she retired the next three batters she faced, including a strikeout to end the inning.
The Pios continued to put the pressure on in the next inning, capitalizing on a Toro error and ensuing double steal of 2nd and home to score what would prove to be the game's lone run.
Bhatt was the tough luck loser, saddled with the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
The Toros host Biola on Friday for a non-conference doubleheader, with game one starting at 12 noon.
