CARSON -- No. 22 Cal State Dominguez Hills scored five runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 5-inning 12-1 win over visiting Cal State East Bay to open today's twinbill at Toro Diamond.
Jay Ross,
Alani Nguyen and
Nayah Pola paced the offense with two runs scored each while
Raquel Jaime (pictured) added three base on balls, and regular infielder
Amara Labonog tossed the final 1.1 innings in relief to pick up the first win of her college career.
In CSUDH's first at-bat of the game, a bases loaded single by Pola brought home the first run before a Pio error two batters later brought home the second run of the frame. After a passed ball,
Kianna Abellera singled to the pitcher for an RBI, with two more runners scoring on an errant throw by CSUEB's pitcher for a 5-0 lead.
An inning later, a Ross single sandwiched between a pair of walks loaded the bases, before a wild pitch scored Ross. After another walk to load the bases again,
Alex Davis drove home two with an opposite field single, before
Maiya Lopez drove home two more on her sizzler up the middle for a 10-0 lead.
CSUDH added a single run in the 3rd and 4th frames, limiting CSUEB to just one run for the mercy run-rule win.
Toro starter
Alyssa Olague went 3.2 and scattered three hits, fanning two in the process.
In the nightcap, CSUDH exploded for four runs in the 3rd with Jaime collecting two hits and two RBI in the win, and
Alyssa Yslas going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
Prior to that frame,
Kaylee Hull drove in the game's first run with an RBI single after which Yslas and Jaime each knocked RBI hits for a 3-0 lead.
East Bay finally got on the board to spoil the shutout bid in the eventual 7-2 final.
Hull, Lopez and Abellera belted two hits apiece as the Toros collected 12 in the game..
Ashley Wies tossed a 112-pitch, complete game, scattering just three hits.
The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11 am on Toro Diamond.
