SAN MARCOS -- Seven historically has been a lucky number in the annals of numerology, but today it proved detrimental as No. 17 Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped a pair of 7-6 decisions at No. 5 Cal State San Marcos this morning.
Both
Kaylee Hull (pictured) and
Alani Nguyen went yard again in today's losses, dropping the Toros to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in the CCAA.
The opener looked promising after erupting for five runs in the 3rd that erased a 1-0 deficit. In the frame, a Cougar error brought home the second run of the frame, with
Raquel Jaime accounting for the big blow, a 2RBI single up the middle for the frame's final two runs.
After Nguyen went deep in the 4th for a 6-1 lead, the Cougars answered with a run in the 4th and three in the 5th to cut their deficit to a single run, and proceeded to score single runs in the 6th and 7th for the win.
Hull finished with a 3-for-4 performance and was aided by
Kianna Abellera's 2-for-4 effort in the loss.
In the nightcap, Hull continued her hot bat with a solo shot in the 2nd, with
Alex Davis doubling in
Nayah Pola and
Alexus Corona bringing home Davis for a 3-0 lead.
Like the opener, however, CSUSM replied with a pair of runs in its 2nd-inning at-bat to cut into CSUDH's lead. After the Toros answered back with three in the 4th, the Cougars tied it two innings later with four runs, sending the game into extras, where they won it in the 8th, saddling Toro pitcher
Sara Bhatt with her first loss of the year.
CSUDH returns home next weekend to host Cal State East Bay on Friday, March 24, starting at 1 pm on Toro Diamond.
