Game 2
CARSON -- Sophomores
Kaylee Hull and
Alex Davis went deep while junior pitcher
Sara Bhatt (pictured) tossed 3.0 perfect innings with five strikeouts as No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 4-1 opener against visiting Pace University (NY) to open this afternoon's twinbill on Toro Diamond before taking the nightcap, 5-1, as Bhatt earned her second save of the day.
In the opener, it was a 1-1 game until the bottom of the 4th when Hull started the 3-run inning with a one-out solo shot over the left field wall, a line drive that reached an apex of approximately 20 feet.
Davis followed two batters later with her own shot to left field, driving home pinch-runner
Mia Ayala, for a 3-run cushion.
That was plenty for Bhatt, who faced the minimum nine batters in her 3.0 innings of work, retiring all nine batters on just 38 pitches.
Starter
Alyssa Olague picked up the win after 4.0 innings of work to improve to 6-4, scattering four hits and fanning four.
After Pace pushed across an unearned run to open game two, the Toro bats stayed silent until their 5th-inning at bat.
In that frame,
Alani Nguyen stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and two out, and proceeded to knock a base hit to third base which brought home both runners for a 2-1 lead.
The Setters looked to tie the game in the 6th but
Alyssa Yslas had other ideas. With a runner on second, Jenny Gordon sent a scorching two-hopper down the third bae line. Yslas, however, who was playing even with the bag, dove to her right and, while on her knees, gunned Gordon out at first to keep the Toros in front.
Bolstered by her stellar effort, the Toros added three insurance runs, with Yslas singling down the left field line to bring home one of the runs.
That was plenty for Bhatt, who tossed 1.2 innings with one hit and one strikeout for the save, her second in as many outings.
The Toros resume play at national power Cal State San Marcos for a four-game set starting Friday.
