ROHNERT PARK -- True freshman
Nala Williams' team-high 15 points led a balanced Cal State Dominguez Hills attack that saw three teammates score in double-figures en route to a gritty 60-50 win over Sonoma State tonight in the Wolves' Den.
The Toros continue to build upon their already history-making season, racking up their 21st win of the year against just one loss.
Already guaranteed a spot in the upcoming CCAA Tournament in early March by virtue of its wins last week, the Toros still have plenty to play for as a top seed and the regular season championship remain in limbo. And play they did to begin the game as they allowed the hosts just two points in the first quarter to build a commanding 16-2 lead after one.
SSU, however, found its stroke and whittled the deficit to 20-10 before a
Kelsey Bell triple pushed the Toro lead up to 13 at 23-10, with an
Auren Isaacson bucket at the 1:49 mark giving CSUDH a 29-14 edge before settling for a 29-17 lead entering the half.
It was more of the same after the break as CSUDH stretched its cushion to 18 points at 35-17 on another Isaacson bucket, and to a game-high 19 points at 40-21 after Williams drained a triple at the 4:52 mark and led the Toros to a 44-28 lead after three.
The Seawolves managed to cut into their deficit in the final period, but it was too little too late as CSUDH took the 10-point win.
Isaacson added 13 points,
Deejanae Poland 11 and Bell 10 to round out the balanced attack. Williams also tied for game-high honors with eight boards, along with teammate
Dawnyel Lair.
As a team, CSUDH shot just under 74% from the foul line and 43% from the floor, while its defense limited SSU to just 29.4% shooting.
CSUDH completes its road trip on Saturday at Cal Poly Humboldt, with tip set for 5:30 pm.
