Lair and Williams Lead No. 5/9 Toros' 84-62 Win Over Lumberjacks

ARCATA -- The super duo of Dawnyel Lair (pictured) and Nala Williams combined for 33 points and 16 boards as No. 5/9 Cal State Dominguez Hills added to its impressive campaign by posting a convincing 84-62 win over Cal Poly Humboldt tonight in Arcata.

Winners of three-straight, CSUDH improves to 23-1 overall and 11-1 in CCAA play.  With the win, the Toros sit just three wins away from tying the program record for wins, set during the 2014-15 CCAA Championship season.

The Toros started strong by scoring the game's first six points, building an 18-8 lead on a Deejanae Poland jumper with 3:19 left in the first quarter.  A pair of Lair free throws spurred a 9-2 run to close the frame, with a Williams' triple putting the Toros up 27-10.

The second quarter was more of the same as the Toros took a 32-10 lead on a Rebecca Penner 3-pointer, with the lead hovering around the 20-point mark the rest of the quarter, resulting in a 48-26 halftime lead for the Cardinal and Gold.

CSUDH continued to keep the pressure on the Jacks, opening up a 24-point lead at 56-32 on another triple, this one by Kelsey Bell at the 7:23 mark, before settling for a 65-47 lead after three.

The hosts closed to within 16 points early in the final stanza, only to have a Williams' old-fashioned 3-point play push the Toro lead to 19, eventually winning by 22.

Williams finished with a game-high 20 points, with Lair added 13 and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Toros shot 46.7% from the floor and sizzled from the charity stripe by converting 19-for-22 (86.4%), while holding CPH to just 38.7% from the floor and stealing 12 balls compared to just three for the hosts.

CSUDH returns home on Thursday to host Cal State San Marcos in a crucial battle for the CCAA regular season title.  The Toros currently lead the Cougars by 1.0 game after besting CSUSM, 74-73, on the road last month.
