Lair's 20 Points Leads No. 6/10 Toros to 78-66 Win Over Broncos, Clinch CCAA Postseason Berth

CARSON -- Dawnyel Lair led all scorers with 20 points as four Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros hit the double-figure scoring mark en route to a 78-66 win over visiting Cal Poly Pomona in a matinee meeting in the Torodome.

The No. 6/10 Toros improve to 21-1 overall, and 15-1 in the CCAA, with the win clinching a berth in the upcoming CCAA tournament, according to the CCAA office.

Things started poorly for the Toros as the visitors scored the game's first 12 points.  A Deejanae Poland triple finally got CSUDH on the board midway through the first quarter, before a Lair jumper in the pain brought the Toros to within 12-9 with 2:47 left.

The Broncos, however, pushed their lead back to double digits, settling for a 22-12 lead to end the frame.

CPP's lead remained in double figures three minutes into the second quarter, when Poland, Lair and Asia Jordan combined to bring the hosts to within 32-30 with 1:26 left before the half, with CPP enjoying a 35-32 lead as the second quarter's buzzer sounded.

Kelsey Bell opened the third quarter with a long triple to knot the score at 35-all, before a Bronco turnover and an ensuing Jordan layup gave the Toros their first lead of the game at the 8:28 mark.

The Broncos replied, however, going on a 20-13 run to close the frame, looking for the upset leading 55-50 heading into the final stanza.

A Nala Williams bucket to open the fourth cut CPP's lead to just three, with a pair of Williams free throws tying the game at 58-58.

Those freebies spurred a CSUDH run that saw the Toros take a 74-64 lead with 1:25 left in regulation on a deep Williams three, giving the Toros control of the game in the eventual 12-point win.

Poland finished with 16, Williams 14 and Jordan 13, with Bell's nine nearly giving the Toros five players scoring in double figures.

Bell was spectacular from downtown, burying three of four on the night.

CSUDH travels to Rohnert Park on Thursday to battle Sonoma State, with tip set for 5:30 pm.
