No. 2 Softball Takes Two at CUI tournament

IRVINE -- Shaking off a loss to open its 2023 season yesterday, defending NCAA West Region Champion and 2nd-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills took both games on day two of the CUI Kickoff Classic, hosted by Concordia University Irvine, to pick up its third win in a row.

Newcomer Sara Bhatt picked up the win against her former school in Hawaii Hilo to kick off today's action with Alyssa Olague (pictured) tossing a 1-hit gem to blank Dominican in the nightcap.

CSUDH 4, UHH 2
The Toros got on the board early after Nayah Pola drew a bases-loaded walk, with Alex Davis bringing home the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

After the Vulcans tied the game with a single run in the 4th and 6th innings, CSUDH answered with a pair in their 6th-inning at-bat as Faith Hernandez doubled home Davis, with a UHH error allowing Sydney Diaz to scamper home as well.

Bhatt pitched 1.1 innings in relief to pick up her second win as a Toro, with Olague hurling 2.0 innings for a save.

Kianna Abellera knocked two hits to lead all hitters in the CSUDH win.

CSUDH 3, Dominican 0
Olague was the story in the nightcap, tossing a complete-game one-hitter with 10 Ks in the shutout.

After allowing a 1st-inning single, Olague retired the next 19 hitters she faced to complete her gem, fanning the final batter she faced on three pitches.

An Amara Labonog RBI single in the 2nd inning proved to be the only run Olague would need on the day, but the Toros benefited from a pair of sacrifice flies to add insurance runs.

Newcomer Jay Ross tallied a pair of hits in the win as CSUDH improved to 3-1 on the young season.

The Toros conclude the Kickoff Classic tomorrow against Central Washington, with first pitch set for 9:30 am.
