No. 14 Toros Reach Sweet 16th Consecutive Win After 77-65 Victory Over Gators

CARSON -- Fourteenth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills reached another milestone after taking down visiting San Francisco State by a 77-65 count, not only winning its 16th-consecutive game to remain undefeated, but also adding to the program record with its 16th-straight win.

Dawnyel Lair again led the way for the hosts, tallying game-highs in points (20), rebounds (17), assists (6), and steals (5).

The Toros continued to sizzle offensively after nailing 41.1% of their shots from the floor and an even better 47.1% from downtown, but their defense was the difference maker as the Cardinal and Gold enjoyed a substantial edge in steals (+6) in addition to a significant amount of deflections and shot-altering schemes.

Unlike Thursday afternoon when the Toros got off to a slow start against the winless Otters, CSUDH enjoyed a 13-10 lead midway through the first period after Lair converted a layup at the 4:05 mark.

Allyah Cartajena, who scored 17 points including 6-of-8 from the charity stripe, gave the Toros a 6-point edge at 20-14 after her own gimme in the paint en route to a 23-18 lead after one.

A Rebecca Penner triple two minutes into the second quarter put CSUDH up 28-20 as the Toros built their lead to nine on three occasions in the frame, the last coming on another Penner downtown bomb with 23 ticks left on the second quarter clock.

CSUDH finally pushed its lead to double-figures after Lair's bucket at the 4:16 mark gave the hosts a 50-39 lead, with Joe'l Benoit increasing the edge to 54-39 two minutes later.

To their credit, the Gators refused to fold, narrowing their deficit to just three after a long three by Taimaine Lesa-Hardee with 9:24 left in regulation.  But a pair of Cartajena freebies gave CSUDH breathing room and spurred a run that saw the Toros again push their lead to double-digits at 62-51, capped by a Cartajena layup.

That's where the lead hovered the rest of the way, much to the delight of the raucous Torodome crowed that saw CSUDH continue its magical start.

Penner added 12 points in the win, a season-high effort.

CSUDH takes to the road next weekend, facing crosstown-rival Cal State LA on Thursday before a showdown with CS San Marcos in what could be a preview to both the CCAA and NCAA tournaments.
