Cartajena Flies No. 10 Toros to 17th Straight Win

LOS ANGELES – Allyah Cartajena just keeps putting up the numbers. After scoring a career-high 17 points last Saturday, the junior went on to drop 20 along with grabbing 12 rebounds for not only a double-double, but career-high marks to help No. 10 Cal State Dominguez Hills fly away from crosstown rivals Cal State LA 76-59 at University Gym Thursday evening.

The Toros continue going where they've never gone before in the record book, keeping their perfect run at 17-0 overall and 11-0 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles fall to 10-6 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA, allowing Chico State to tie them for fourth place in the standings.

Dawnyel Lair, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week and D2CIDA National Player of the Week, continues to have hot hands, scoring 17 points including 7-of-8 on the free throw line. Joe'l Benoit also hit double figures in points, scoring 11.

The Toros, who nearly reached their season average of 78.8 points per game, shot 41.3 percent from the field, including 5-of-19 from 3-point range.

Dominguez Hills had won all but the second quarter in the game. It set the tone with a 22-11 score in the opening period and although LA won the second round 20-15, the Toros took the second half 39-28 to maintain their perfect season.

After LA's Yesenia Smith connected a 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles ahead 11-10 with less than six minutes left in the first quarter, the Toros responded by going on a 12-0 run the rest of the period to take the lead the rest of the game.

The Toros had a 37-31 lead going into halftime.

Dominguez Hills will face perhaps its ultimate test in the conference, a road trip to No. 18 Cal State San Marcos Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cougars are coming off a 10-point win over Cal State East Bay to stay one game behind the Toros.
