CARSON -- Senior guard
Dawnyel Lair led all players with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals as No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills shook off a sluggish start to run away with an 83-66 win over a hot-shooting Cal State Monterey Bay squad Thursday night in the Torodome, remaining perfect at 15-0 overall and 9-0 in the CCAA.
The Otters, meanwhile, dip to 4-10 overall, and continue to search for their first conference win, falling to 0-9 in the CCAA.
Despite staying winless in league play, the Otters came out firing in the first quarter, opening a double-digit lead at 20-10 with 2:34 left in the period before settling for a 24-18 lead after one.
Behind buckets by
Asia Jordan and four-straight points courtesy of
Deejanae Poland, the hosts clawed to within two points at 26-24 with just over two minutes elapsed in the second quarter, taking their first lead of the game on an
Allyah Cartajena layup midway through the period en route to taking a slim 41-39 lead into halftime.
Monterey Bay continued to match CSUDH's effort to start the third quarter, cutting its deficit to 51-50 with 5:19 left in the frame.
That's when the Toros found their groove as a Cartejena jumper ignited a 9-0 run, with Lair,
Joe'l Benoit and
Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson all contributing to the deluge.
Up five points to begin the quarter, the hosts turned up the heat on defense, suffocating the now-stagnant Otter offense and turning 10 CSUMB turnovers into 13 points to outscore the visitors by 12 in the frame.
Fittingly, Lair scored four-straight points in a key stretch that gave CSUDH its largest lead at 18 points, hitting 6-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Benoit and Cartajena added 13 points each while Bell contributed 12 and Jordan 11 to keep CSUDH's record perfect this season.
As a team, the Toros shot 50.8% from the floor while out-rebounding the Otters by eight and dishing four more assists.
CSUDH sees action next on Saturday as San Francisco State visits Carson, set for a 1 pm start.
