CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team dropped its third-consecutive five-set loss over the weekend after falling to Stanislaus State, 12-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-25 6-15, in a non-conference matchup on the final day of the Toro Classic.
Shelby Saporetti with 14 and
Ava Hurry with 12 paced the Toro attack as CSUDH took two of the first three sets, only to have the Warriors storm back to win the final two.
After the Warriors dominated the opening set, the two teams split the first 16 points before the Toros went on a 4-1 run, courtesy of Hurry's strong serve. The Warriors took a 14-13 lead, only to see the Toros run off four in a row for a 17-14 lead, and then go on a 7-4 run to bring CSUDH to set point, which Hurry hammered home to knot the match at 1-1.
CSUDH capitalized on its momentum after intermission, turning an early 5-2 lead into a 16-12 cushion after a
Samaya Royal hammer.
Stan State crept to within 21-19 deep into the set, until
Cassie Taylor earned three points to give the Toros set point, setting the stage for another Hurry putaway to put the Toros up, 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Warriors raced to an 8-1 lead, pushing their edge to 22-14 late. The Toros managed to cut their deficit to 24-19 until a CSUDH serving error gave Stan State the win, forcing a decisive fifth.
Stan State again jumped out early to the tune of an 8-1 lead, never looking back in taking the set 15-6, and the match, 3-2.
As a team, the hosts hit .149, committing nine more errors than Stan State.
CSUDH resumes action tonight against Chaminade, with first serve set for 7:30 pm.
