CARSON -- With temperatures reaching close to 100 degrees in Toro Stadium, arguably the only thing hotter was the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team after taking a 2-0 win over visiting Point Loma to improve to a perfect 4-0 in the young season.
The last time the Toros won their first four matches was during the 2010 season when that squad started 5-0.
Coming into today's match winless in two tries, Point Loma knew it had to be the aggressor, and they did just that by outshooting the hosts 6-3 in the first half.
That pattern continued after intermission as the Sea Lions tallied a 12-5 edge in shots. However, two of CSUDH's shots found paydirt, using angles Euclid would be proud of.
In the 48th minute,
Martin Velasquez fed reigning CCAA Player of the Week
Sulaiman Bah down the right side. Bah proceeded to dribble past a pair of PLNU defenders within five feet of the goal line, before sending his shot on goal, one that had no more than a 20 degree arc to the right and past PLNU keeper Seth Ketterer.
Thirty-five minutes later,
Zane Baumgardt mirrored Bah's effort by dribbling down the left side and through three Sea Lion defenders, deep in to the PLNU zone. About five feet from the goal line, he sent his shot to the left of the keeper with a similar 20 degree arc, finding paydirt and setting off a raucous celebration.
Of PLNU's three best chances, two shots went off the cross bar. The third was a penalty kick attempt in the 88th minute that CSUDH keeper
Frank Aguilar saved after coming in as a substitute for starter
Sebastian Ascencio in the 57th minute.
The Toros will take to the road for two non-conference matchups, starting with Western Oregon on Friday, September 9.
