Volleyball Drops Three-Setter to No. 23 Broncos

CARSON -- Freshman Ava Hurry tied for match-high honors with 13 kills, but No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona handed Cal State Dominguez Hills its fourth-straight loss in CCAA Conference play in a 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 decision.

The Toros drop to 3-9 overall, and 1-4 in CCAA action.

CPP inched out to a 4-1 lead to open the match before five straight points courtesy of Robles' tough serve gave CSUDH the lead at 6-4.  Tied at 12-12, kills by Cassie Taylor and Samaya Royal preceded an Angelina Cabal ace to put the Toros up by three.

The Broncos knotted the frame with three-straight points of their own, setting up a frenetic finish that saw the teams tie three more times in the frame, until CPP broke a 23-all tie with two-straight points to take the opener.

CSUDH looked determined to even the match after scoring set two's first five points, pushing its lead to 10-3 .  The Broncos, however, caught the Toros at 15-all, and built a 20-17 edge to seemingly take control of the frame.

The Toros caught the visitors at 20-20 behind two Bronco errors and an Evania Sanchez service ace, and found themselves knotted at 23-23 on a Taylor blast and another CPP miscue.

Similar to the opener, CPP took the final two points to build a commanding two sets to none lead.

Set three was all CPP as it turned a 7-3 lead into a 16-9 edge, keeping the Toros at arm's length the rest of the set en route to the 25-16 decision.

The Toros boasted an 8-0 edge in service aces as Jenna Sandall and Angelina Robles earned three apiece, but made nine more attack errors and hit jut .080 in the loss.

Tomorrow doesn't get any easier for the Toros as they welcome No. 12 and perennial power CS San Bernardino for a 5 pm first serve.
