SAN MARCOS -- Junior
Shelby Saporetti led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 11 kills, but host Cal State San Marcos roared back from a first-set loss to win three straight en route to a 3-1 victory over the Toros in a matinee matchup.
CSUDH falls to 3-8 overall, and 1-3 in the CCAA.
The Toros got off to a quick start in the opener, hammering home 10 kills with just two errors en route to a sizzling .381 hitting percentage. After surrendering the first point, CSUDH scored the next six, fueled by
Angelina Robles' stellar serve. The lead ballooned to 10-3 and then 19-7, again behind Robles at the service line.
Up 22-10, the Toros scored the set's final three points to run away with the set-one win.
After splitting the first eight points of the second, the Cougars went on a 4-0 run before CSUDH tied the set at 10. Tied again at 18-18, CSUSM outscored the Toros 7-3 to close the set, knotting the match at one set apiece.
Set three saw CSUDH jump out to an early 4-1 lead, keeping its edge at 3 points en route to an 11-8 advantage. That's when the Cougars regrouped, outscoring the Toros 10-1 to gain control of the set at 18-12 before capturing the stanza and taking a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Taking advantage of their momentum, the Cougars took a 9-4 lead to open set four, only to see the Toros catch the hosts at 18-all on a Saporetti blast. That would be as close as the Toros would get, however, as CSUSM would go on a 7-2 run to close the set, winning the match, 3 sets to 1.
Ava Hurry added 10 kills in the loss, with Robles finishing with four service aces to lead all players.
As a team, CSUDH ended the match hitting .142, while CSUSM rose to a .189 hitting percentage after a horrendous start.
CSUDH will look to get back on the winning track at home as it hosts Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, September 23, with first serve set for 5 pm.
