Covarrubias Scores Early into the Second Half but Fresno Pacific Keeps Women's Soccer Still in Search for Win

CARSON – Alicia Covarrubias scored her first goal of the season to tie the match early into the second half, but the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team fell to Fresno Pacific 2-1 at the Dignity Health Sports Park Thursday to wrap up the true non-conference schedule.

The Toros remain in search for a win as they prepare for a non-CCAA matchup with Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at noon. They match will be played at the DHSP Field #3. Fans can enter the practice field from Avalon Boulevard and park in Lot 10.

Tonight's match was all about the Sunbirds, who improve to 2-2-2. While they dominated the shots column 17-6, they were on target seven times. Despite Kekoa Nelson's effort to break a cross in the box, FPU's Maria Eir Magnusdottir collected the ball and shot it into the upper right corner for the match's first goal in the 33rd minute.

Starting out the second half trailing 1-0, the Toros got on the board with Covarrubias' goal five minutes in. Jordan Barber played 1-on-1 with a Sunbird defender in the box and made a short cross for Covarrubias to get a one-touch shot into the open part of the net.

Fresno Pacific broke the tie in the 69th minute. Tori De Leon dribbled from midfield alone and forced a 1-on-1 battle with keeper Alyssa Newsom. De Leon slotted it underneath Newsom for the goal.

Kaia Mills had three of the Toros' six shots in the match.
