Toros Close Regular Season With Split at Monterey Bay

Two teams will face off again at next week's CCAA Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEASIDE -- Now, the second season begins.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team closed its regular season with a 5-0 win over host Cal State Monterey Bay behind a stellar 4-hit effort by Ashley Wies after dropping a 6-2 decision to open today's doubleheader.

With the split, CSUDH has secured the 4th seed for the next weekend's CCAA Tournament, and will face a familiar foe in these same Otters in its opening game on Thursday, May 5. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and can be watched live on the CCAA Network.

In the nightcap, the Toros jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in their first at-bat, courtesy of a Claudia Valencia 2RBI single down the right field line.

Valencia added to her stat line with an RBI single to the pitcher in the 3rd to make it 3-0, before Katelyn Sturm went yard in the 7th for an extra run.  With runners at the corners, Raquel Jaime sent a deep fly ball to right field in foul territory, which was deep enough to bring home Haylee Garcia with the final run of the game.

Wies needed 96 pitches for hte complete-game win to improve to 19-4, fanning five against just one walk.  Valencia, meanwhile, enjoyed a 3-for-4 outing at the plate, bringing home three RBI.

In the opener, after the Toros got on the board in the top of the 1st on a Kianna Abellera RBI single, the Otters scored six unanswered to take a 6-1 lead.  CSUDH looked to come back in its final at-bat after Jaime knocked an RBI single, but it was too little, too late as the hosts took the 6-2 win.

Jaime wielded the hot stick, going 4-for-4 in the contest.

Cal State San Marcos is the top seed in the 3-day tournament, and is followed by Chico State, Sonoma State, the Toros, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay, which locked up the final spot on the final game of the season by edging SF State..
