Late-Inning Home Runs Benefit Toros and Host Otters in Softball Split

SEASIDE -- After a walk-off home run by host Cal State Monterey Bay in the 8th inning sent the home crowd into a frenzy to begin today's twinbill, Cal State Dominguez Hills' Raquel Jaime exacted a bit of revenge after belting a solo shot to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the 7th, giving the Toros a double-header split.

With the result, CSUDH stays put in fourth place in the CCAA standings, with the top six team qualifying for the CCAA postseason tournament, set to begin next weekend. With Chico State and Sonoma State splitting their doubleheader in Chico, the Toros remain one game behind the Seawolves for third. Dominguez Hills needs to win both games and Sonoma to split with Chico in Saturday's finale OR the Toros win one and the Seawolves lose both their games to lock up the third seed.

Down a game and on the wrong end of a 2-0 score after one inning of play, the Toros got on the board after Katelyn Sturm was plunked in the 4th with the bases loaded.  An Otter error two innings later scored pinch runner Angelina Alderete, setting the stage for Jaime's heroics in the 7th.

Ashley Wies went the distance to pick up her 18th win of the year, with Chenoa Au rapping two hits for the Toros, and Kaylee Hull drawing three walks.

In the opener, the visitors scored twice in the 2nd on a CSUMB error and Dafne Bravo RBI single.  After the Otters cut their deficit in half in their 2nd-inning at-bat, the Toros got that run back on a Claudia Valencia RBI single to give CSUDH a 3-1 lead.

The Otters, however, finally got to Toro starter Alyssa Olague in the 7th with two runs, and then walked off in the 8th on a solo shot with two outs in the frame.

The two teams complete their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11am at the Otter Sports Complex.
