Mullins Goes the Distance in Game One; Toros Split Twinbill with Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES – It was two different tales between Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA Saturday at Reeder Field. Isaac Mullens pitched nearly the entire game and got a late surge from his offensive teammates to post a 13-2 blowout game one win. Game two, however, was the other way around as the Golden Eagles struck early en route to a 6-1 result in the nightcap.

Game 1 – CSUDH 13, CSLA 2
It was all Isaac Mullins who put together the show as he threw a season-high 8.1 innings and held the Golden Eagles to only the two runs in the third inning. He ended up giving up seven hits and two walks on the day.

The Toros scored only two runs in the first three innings but did all the damage in the late inning, starting with the seventh inning. Eric Smelko, who went 5-for-5 in the game, singled to center and Scott Ogrin followed with a double but a fielding error by the right fielder allowed Smelko to score the go-ahead run. Shortly after Alberto Luevano singled in a run, Matt Mecate's first home run as a Toro was indeed grand as he hit a grand slam to bump the Toros' lead to 8-2.

One inning later, Smelko led off again with another base hit and Ogrin reached on an error. Pierson Loska singled to knock in Smelko and Ogrin would reached home plate on a balk call. Emilio Barrera would hit a sacrifice fly to score in Loska for the 11th run.

Julio Lopez came in the ninth to relieve Mullin and got the two remaining outs on a flyout and a groundout.

Game 2 – CSLA 6, CSUDH 1
The second game of the series was very much the opposite of game one, which the Toros only registered five hits in this game comparing to the 19 earlier in the day.

LA did all the damage in the first inning, plating four runs off starter Nate Ortiz. The right-hander did complete the game and struck out two but he surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and three walks.

The Toros' lone run of the game came in the sixth inning, when Eric Smelko homered to right field for his fifth of the year.

The two sides wrap up the series Sunday at a rare 1 p.m. first pitch.
