Olague Fans 12 Penguins to Help Toros Impressively Finish Second in CUI Kickoff Classic

IRVINE – Alyssa Olague tallied 12 strikeouts, including four straight on two different occasions, and halted a seventh-inning rally Dominican put together to preserve a 5-4 win on the final day of the season-opening weekend at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Sunday afternoon.

The Toros head back to campus feeling good about themselves after going 5-1 in the 21-team tournament. Because of the odd number of teams participating, the Toros volunteered to play the extra game, which included the rare tripleheader on opening day Friday. With that 5-1 record, the Toros were recognized as the runner-up in the classic behind the undefeated host Concordia, which went 5-0.

Dominguez Hills, designated as the visitor against Dominican, quickly jumped ahead 2-0 when Claudia Valencia and Kianna Abellera got on base to lead off the game and were driven home when Katelyn Sturm hit a single through the left side.

After the Penguins tied the game 2-2 when they got their first chance at the plate, the Toros responded back in the second. Dafne Bravo hit a one-out single, Alex Davis followed with a double to put both runners into scoring position and Valencia smacked a two-run double down the left field line to break the tie. Abellera followed with an infield single that proved to be the winning run.

Despite giving up two runs in the first and final innings against the Penguins (1-4), the right-hander Olague was dominant in between frames, giving up just a hit during that run. Her 12 strikeout performance was her best since her career-high 15 mark against Montana State Billings in 2020.

The seventh inning became a stressful inning for Olague. With runners on second and third and two down, Olague was one strike away from sealing the game until a two-run triple by the Penguins slashed the lead to one. Olague did get the victory with her 12th strikeout to end the game.

The Toros now head to Tuscon, Arizona to partake Montana State Billings' Desert Stinger. Traditionally, Desert Stinger had been held in Las Vegas, Nevada, but was relocated to Lincoln Park in Arizona. Dominguez Hills will start the tournament off on Friday with Western Washington at 1:30 p.m. PST and Minot State at 4 p.m. PST.
