TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team dominated Western Washington (12-2, 5 innings) and Minot State (5-0) to open the Desert Stinger Tournament, sweeping the day's games, running its win streak to six, and its overall mark to 7-1.
This stretch ties the mark for the best start in the history of the program, set during the 2004 campaign.
Kianna Abellera's five hits and four RBI paced the hot Toro offense, while
Ashley Wies and
Alyssa Olague each picked up a win.
After staking WWU to a 2-1 lead after the first inning, CSUDH scored 11 unanswered runs in the runaway.Â
Chenoa Au began the deluge with a 2-RBI triple as part of a four-run 2nd, adding a
Dafne Bravo ribbie in the 3rd, and three more in the 4th, courtesy of an Abellara sacrifice fly, and RBI baseknocks by
Maiya Lopez and
Raquel Jaime.
Abellera capped the scoring with a 2-RBI double to put the game further out of reach, allowing Wies to finish her fourth inning of no-hit relief in the win, cutting through the Viking bats with seven strikeouts in improving to 3-1.
Against Minot State, the Toro scored thrice in the 2nd inning, courtesy of two Beaver errors, before an RBI single by Jaime and an RBI double by
Amara Labonog closed the scoring, the last of Labonog's three hits in the contest.
Olague hurled a complete-game shutout to pick up her fourth-straight win, fanning three batters without a walk.
CSUDHÂ looks for its best start in the history of the program tomorrow against NW Nazarene, with first pitch set for 12 noon.
