Toros Came Close to First Perfect Game in Program History; Settles with Two Wins

IRVINE – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team saw two different types of excitement in day two of the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Saturday.

The combination of Alyssa Olague and Ashley Wies came up just three outs short from a perfect game, two from a no-hitter, in the Toros' 16-0 mercy-rule win over Academy of Art. Then in the nightshift, Katelyn Sturm came up clutch with a two-run double in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and give Dominguez Hills a 5-2 win over Montana State Billings to complete the two-game sweep.

Game 1 – CSUDH 16, ART 0 (5 Innings)
While Olague and Wies were the highlight of the game in their run to perfection, the offense did not stop from slugging away against three ARTU hurlers. Maiya Lopez hit a two-run single in the first inning and then the Toros plated four runs in the third, four in the third, eight in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Although the Toros racked up 18 hits, Kianna Abellera had the only extra base knock, a double in the first.

Olague only threw 31 pitches and struck out four before giving Wies the ball in the third. Wies needed to only throw 45 pitches and struck out two. Knowing the mercy rule was in effect after the Toros plated the eight runs in the fourth, Wies went into the fifth needing just the three outs to complete the perfect game. Unfortunately, she walked the leadoff hitter after a six-pitch battle but did strike out the next batter. She then lost the no-hit bid on a single down the right field line but did get the third out to close out the game.

The Toros are still waiting for the first perfect game in program history to happen. There have been 13 no-hitters in Toros history. Jamie Duran was the last to do so when she no-hit the same Academy of Art program at the 2016 Tournament of Champions.

Game 2 – CSUDH 5, MSUB 2
Olague went from start to finish this time against the Yellowjackets. She surrendered a run in the first inning but was backed by her offense when they got their first chance at the plate. Claudia Valencia and Abellera hit back-to-back singles to lead off and Chenoa Au moved both of them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Valencia scored on a wild pitch and Abellera scored on Lopez's ground out.

Olague pitched shutout innings until the fifth inning when Montana State Billings tied the game on an RBI single.

Lopez opened the sixth inning with a triple to right center and Raquel Jaime drew a walk to get on base and stole second to setup for Sturm's two-run double down the left field line and give the Toros a 4-2 lead. Amara Labonog laid down a successful bunt single to score in Jonessa Hebreo, who pinch-ran for Sturm.

Olague had a six-strikeout performance in the circle.

The Toros wrap up the weekend at Great Park facing Dominican Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
