CARSON -- Visiting Cal Poly Humboldt spoiled Cal State Dominguez Hills' Homecoming by taking 9-6 and 7-2 wins over the Toros this afternoon on Toro Diamond, dropping the cardinal and gold to 10-5 overall, and 1-3 in CCAA play.
Humboldt, meanwhile, improves to 7-5, 3-1 CCAA.
The visitors used big innings in each of the games to take control, while CSUDH committed an un-Toro like nine errors on the day.
The opener saw the Toros take a 2-1 lead after their first at-bat, courtesy of
Kianna Abellera and
Raquel Jaime RBI hits. That lead was short-lived, however, as the visitors tied the game in the 3rd, and scored five in the 4th to break the game open.
CSUDH capitalized on Humboldt's own defensive miscues with unearned runs in the 4th and 5th and looked to mount a rally with a single run in the 7th, but a blast off the bat of
Amara Labonog with a runner on 1st base was snagged by CPH's shortstop, who doubled up the runner to end the game.
Jaime and
Angelina Alderete each knocked two hits in the game, while pitcher
Alyssa Olague gave up one earned run with five strikeouts in the loss.
The visitors continued their momentum in the nightcap, scoring five runs for a commanding lead.
That's where the score remained until the bottom of the 6th when CSUDH scored on a Humboldt error. The Toros, however, gave away two runs of their own in Humboldt's top of the 7th, before a
Dafne Bravo RBI single in CSUDH's final at-bat accounted for the game's final score.
Olague lasted just two-thirds of an inning in the loss.
The Toros return to Toro Diamond next weekend to host Stanislaus State in a four-game set, with first pitch of Friday's doubleheader set for 12 noon.
