CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team erupted for 13 runs to take a nightcap win over visiting Cal Poly Humboldt to salvage a split in its home-opening double-header, after the Lumberjacks withstood a late Toro rally to hold off the hosts 5-3 in the opener.
The Toros move to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play, with the Jacks now sitting at 5-5 and 1-1 in league action.
After dropping the opener, the Toros put up four in their first at-bat, capitalizing on a pair of Humboldt errors.
The Jacks answered with a run in the second before CSUDHÂ scored four more in the 3rd, the big blow coming on a
Katelyn Sturm 2RBI double to give CSUDH an 8-1 cushion.
With the score 9-3, CSUDH put the game away in the 5th as
Claudia Valencia hammered her second home run of the contest to left center field, giving the Toros the win via the mercy run rule.
Valencia went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored, while Sturm enjoyed a 2-for-3 game at the plate, driving in 3 and scoring 3 herself.
Ashley Wies tossed a complete-game win, scattering seven hits with three Ks.
The opener was all Humboldt as the visitors took a 5-0 lead into the final inning. That's when the Toro bats woke up, knocking four hits and scoring thrice courtesy of RBI singles from
Raquel Jaime,
Sydney Diaz and
Maiya Lopez to bring CSUDH to within 5-3, and account for the game's final score.
Jaime logged three hits and Lopez two in the contest as
Alyssa Olague suffered the setback.
The two teams conclude their series tomorrow at 10 am, with Homecoming providing the perfect backdrop to what could shape up to be a resurgent rivalry.
