ROHNERT PARK -- An
Auren Isaacson triple with 48 seconds left in regulation gave visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills a 65-64 lead, but host Sonoma State scored the game's final five points in an 18 second stretch to close the contest, handing the Toros a heartbreaking setback in a tight California Collegiate Athletic Association race.
The loss puts Dominguez Hills in a tough position when trying to qualify for the six-team CCAA Tournament in three weeks. With Cal State LA and Stanislaus State beating their respective opponents, the Toros (10-10, 8-7 CCAA) drop to the final spot to the postseason with four games remaining. Because the omicron variant canceled numerous games throughout the CCAA, the conference will now look at win percentage to help determine who will be going to Arcata for the CCAA Tournament. Currently the Golden Eagles own a .600 win percentage to sit in fourth place and Stanislaus State at .538 sits in fifth. Sonoma's (8-13, 7-8 CCAA) win puts them at .467.
After fighting a dryspell in the last two games, Isaacson found her shooting groove again as she scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers made. She combined for 14 points during the two-game cold. The sophomore also came up just a rebound short from her first career double-double.Â
Danyell Booker had eight points to go with her five boards.Â
The Seawolves were led by Zane Sheckherd, who was missed when the two schools met at the Torodome last month. She dropped in 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in their home game. Alli McDonald scored 13 points and Cielo Gonzalez had 10 to round out the top scoring for Sonoma.
It was a close battle the entire game. Neither side had a double digit lead. The fourth quarter saw the two sides lead by no more than five. Trailing 64-62 with 58 seconds left, Isaacson responded 10 seconds later with a three-pointer to retake the lead for the first time since the 4:58 mark. Sheckher answered back with a 3-pointer and a jumper to take a 69-65 lead with six seconds left.
The Toros return home for the final time in the 2021-22 season starting Thursday with last-place Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m.
