IRVINE -- Sophomore
Asia Jordan scored a team-high 26 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as Cal State Dominguez Hills rolled to an 81-66 win at Concordia this afternoon to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Jordan sizzled from the floor, hitting 9-of-16 shots from the floor and 8-of-11 from the foul line and was joined by four teammates who also tallied at least 10 points, including 12 each by
Nala Williams and
Deejanae Poland.
Concordia, meanwhile, drops to 0-2 on the year despite Teagan Thurman pouring in a game-high 27 points.
The Toros took a 27-18 lead after the first quarter, turning a slim 13-12 lead into a 19-12 advantage after
Auren Isaacson and Jordan each sank two freebies, with a Jordan jumper giving CSUDH its largest lead of the quarter at 27-18 with 23 seconds left.
Two more Jordan free throws to begin the second put the Toros up by 11, with five-straight Poland points, a triple by Williams, a bucket by
Hosanna Walker and another jumper by Poland bringing CSUDH to its largest lead of the game at 41-28.
After the Eagles cut their deficit to 21 at 41-20, the Toros responded with six-straight to run their lead to 46-20, settling for a 57-33 lead at the half.
The Toros' lead grew to as high as 28 at 61-33 after a pair of Williams freebies less than two minutes into the second half, with the lead reaching 32 points at 69-37 at the 4:39 mark, courtesy of an
Allyah Cartajena layup.
The Eagles would regroup with a 9-0 run to close the quarter to whittle their deficit to just 70-48, with CSUDH's lone point coming on a
Danyell Booker free throw.
Concordia continued to press the issue to begin the final quarter, getting to within 14 points at 74-60 midway through the fourth.
It was be too little, too late, however, as CSUDH's lead remained in double figures the rest of the way en route to the 81-66 decision.
Dawnyel Lair and Joel Benoit added 10 points apiece, with the Toros winning the battle of the boards, 42-32. CSUDH finished shooting 41.5% from the floor and 73.3% from the foul line in the win and was bolstered by four steals by Williams, who also dished a game-best six assists.
The Toros continue action on the road next weekend, traveling to Point Loma on Saturday for a 2 pm tipoff.
