IRVINE – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team quickly jumped to an 11-0 lead, dominated the first and eventually the season opener as the Toros grounded the Eagles of Biola 74-53 Friday at the annual CCAA/PacWest Challenge held at Concordia University Irvine.
The Toros immediately took control of the game, outscoring the Eagles 40-14 in the first half, including a 24-6 run after the opening period. It was all jumpers the entire first half, hitting 17-of-35 (48.6 percent) while making only three from 3-point range and on the free throw line each.
Dominguez Hills ended the day shooting 45 percent from the field and Biola, despite the sluggish start, hit 40 percent of its shots. The points off turnovers most certainly factored into the game as the Toros scored 24 points off the Eagles' miscues.
Nala Williams dropped in 19 points and recorded seven steals, six rebounds and five steals in her collegiate debut.
Auren Isaacson added 13 points including three of the Toros seven 3-point baskets.
Asia Jordan, last year's first-team All-CCAA selection, begins her sophomore season with 11 points.
The Eagles were led by Jordan Rabe, who scored 15 points and went to the glass six times.
The 11-0 Toro run from the season's opening tip was also the game's longest momentum. The Toros defense held the Eagles without a point until the halfway point of the first quarter.
Friday's win was also the Toros first season-opening victory since the 2018-19 campaign, when they beat Concordia at home. They also beat Biola the very next day.
Speaking of Concordia, that is which Dominguez Hills will face on Saturday when it returns to the Golden Eagles' Gymnasium. Tipoff is at 4:30 p.m.
