Barata's Scores But Toros Fall 2-1 to Jacks

ARCATA – Sabrina Barata scored her second goal of the season in the 72nd minute, but Cal State Dominguez Hills couldn't find the equalizer in a 2-1 defeat to Cal Poly Humboldt Sunday afternoon.

The Toros drop to 1-12-4 overall and 1-7-2 in the CCAA with one match remaining, a stop to Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Dominguez Hills suffered a 2-1 non-conference defeat to Monterey Bay in Carson last month.

The Jacks improve to 6-4-6 overall and 3-2-5 in the CCAA. The win kept Humboldt in the hunt for the sixth and final spot to the upcoming CCAA Tournament beginning next Sunday.

Shortly after the Jacks scored what was eventually the match-winning goal in the 71st minute, the Toros quickly brought back the deficit to one 34 seconds later. Barata collected the loose ball at midfield, passed it to Julia Burdick who fed it back to Barata at the top of the box where she chipped a beautiful shot from the top of the box that arched its way over Jacks keeper Carson Thomson-Terrel.

The Toros had to play from behind since the 64th minute.

Barata had another chance to tie the game in the 78th minute. She stole the ball off a Jacks defender and fired a shot from the top of the box, only for it to be caught by Thomson-Terrel.

Humboldt dominated the shots column 14-6 overall while holding a 6-4 edge on goal. Alyssa Newsom had to make four saves on the day.
