No. 3 Toros Get Back in Win Column, Eye CCAA Championship in Thursday's Finale

ARCATA – Just when No. 3 Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer was four minutes away from having to settle with a draw for the fourth straight match, Sulaiman Bah scored his second goal of the match on a penalty kick that gifted the Toros a 3-2 win at Cal Poly Humboldt Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Toros to 12-0-5 overall and more importantly 6-0-4 in the CCAA. CSUDH's victory also came at a critical moment after Cal Poly Pomona tied Stanislaus State, putting the Toros and Broncos in a tie for first place at 22 points. The two have company as the defending CCAA and NCAA champions Cal State LA was victorious at Cal State East Bay to move to within one point behind the current conference leaders.
The stakes are now high for the three teams as they enter Thursday's regular-season finale with two byes into the CCAA Tournament semifinal on the line and the team that finishes third in the standings has to host the No. 6 seed in the first round October 30.

It will become Decision Thursday for at least seven teams in the CCAA. For the three teams fighting for the championship and the two byes, Dominguez Hills will visit Cal State Monterey Bay, which will be hosting a first round playoff, while Los Angeles will play at Pomona. All CCAA men's soccer matches will kick off at 2 p.m.

Here are some of the 'most obvious scenarios' for the Toros as they enter Thursday's finale. The CCAA may need to initiate its tiebreaking procedure in some of these scenarios.

  • A Toros win and a Bronco loss secures Dominguez Hills (25 points) the CCAA championship outright and the No. 1 seed. Cal State LA (24 points) would take the second seed and Cal Poly Pomona (22 points) takes the third seed.
  • Both the Toros and Broncos would be declared co-champions if they either win (25 points) or tie (23 points) their respective matches and receive the first-round byes. Cal State LA (22 points) would be the No. 3 seed. The CCAA would have to use the tie-breaking procedure in its manual to determine which team between the Toros and Broncos is the No. 1 and 2 seed.
  • If the Toros tie the Otters and the Golden Eagles beat the Broncos, Dominguez Hills (23 points) will finish second in the standings and still receives a first-round bye. Cal State LA (24 points) would be declared the champions and Cal Poly Pomona (22 points) would take the third seed.
  • If the Toros lose or tie the Otters and the Broncos beat the Golden Eagles, Dominguez Hills (23 points for the tie or 22 points for the loss) will finish second in the standings and still receives a first-round bye. Cal Poly Pomona (25 points) would be declared the champions and Cal State LA (21 points) takes the No. 3 seed.
  • If the Toros lose to the Otters and the Golden Eagles beat the Broncos, Cal State LA (24 points) wins the championship. Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona would be tied for second at 22 points and the CCAA will have to implement the tie-breaking procedure to determine which team receives the No. 2 and 3 seeds.
  • The No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed, which is still up in the air between Chico State (14 points), Sonoma State (13 points) and Cal State San Marcos (11 points). Chico visits Humboldt, Sonoma hosts San Francisco State and San Marcos hosts Cal State San Bernardino.

Shifting to the match with Humboldt, the Toros fell behind after the Jacks scored the first goal in the seventh minute. Daniel Adeyeye took a shot inside the box and an error by the Toros defense allowed the goal to be scored unanswered.

The Toros got their first goal in the 26th minute. Nick Walker charged into the box to force Jacks keeper Adrian Gallardo to leave his post. Walker passed it over to Bah for the finishing touch in an open goal.

Just as how Walker helped Bah score the tying goal, Bah would help Walker score the second goal in the 30th minute. Bah delivered a perfect corner kick from the left side to the right post where Walker leaped up and headed it into the net.

The Jacks would tie the match at 2-2 in the 75th minute when Dylan Tovani got a goal from Sean Tucker.

It looked like the Toros were going to have to settle for a fourth straight draw until the Jacks committed a foul inside the box for a penalty kick, leading to Bah's 14th goal of the season in the 87th minute.

The Toros won the shots column 13-9 overall, 8-3 on goal. Frank Aguilar had to make only one save on the day.
