POMONA – Trailing by as many as seven going into the fourth quarter, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team got on a double-digit run and held off Cal Poly Pomona's last possession to post a 65-62 victory for their fourth straight win Thursday night.
It is the first time since the early portion of the 2019-20 season that the Toros have won four straight contests and since 2018-19 that they have won four straight CCAA battles.
In addition, Dominguez Hills has now won seven of their last eight games to improve to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA.
Freshman
Asia Jordan continues to dominate two key stats, scoring 15 points and grabbing a dozen rebounds for her second straight double-double and her sixth on the season.
Auren Isaacson continues her success in the scoring column, dropping in 18 points. She has reached double figures in the points section 12 times this season.
While both teams ended up shooting around the 36 percent mark from the field, Dominguez Hills benefited the free throw lane, going 16-of-24.
The Toros couldn't quite stop Bronco starter Ally Bates, who scored 14 points in the opening period to give Cal Poly Pomona a 17-16 lead at the end of the quarter.
Cal Poly Pomona had led for 29 minutes. But unlike the first meeting with Cal Poly Pomona (5-10, 4-7 CCAA) back in the Torodome, which Dominguez Hills won in double overtime, the Toros did not have to rally from a double-digit deficit. The Broncos had led by as many as nine near the end of the third quarter.
Jordan and Isaacson led the effort during the 13-0 fourth-quarter rally by scoring five points each to help the Toros take a 59-53 lead with 5:30 to go. The Broncos did get to within one on several occasions, including the final possession. With 19 seconds left, the Toros had to play defense around the perimeter which was successful. Bates tried to get a layup at the buzzer to at least get two points but missed and ended the game.
The Toros head further east on Saturday to visit Cal State San Bernardino. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. The Yotes will be limiting spectators to guests of student-athletes, which is four per NCAA policy. Guests must read the
COVID-19 spectator policy for important information before entering Coussoulis Arena.
As always, the game will be available live on the CCAA Network.
