CARSON – Playing their first game at the Torodome in 2022 as well as their first in over a month, the ole saying 'there's no place like home' lived up to it for the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team as the Toros held on to beat Sonoma State 53-45 Thursday evening.
The Toros, winners of five of the last six contests, improve their record to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA. Already in confusion with many games around the conference not played due to COVID-19 protocols, including three earlier in the month, Dominguez Hills finds itself in fourth place in the CCAA standings with just over a month to go in the regular season. CSUDH and the rest of the 11 members will have to wait and see what the CCAA office does in terms of how the championship seeding will work in March.
Shifting to the game, it was a neck-and-neck battle from start to finish. Neither team had a double-digit lead and saw the lead change 13 times and tie for six. Tied at 43 midway through the fourth quarter, the Toros went on an 10-2 run the rest of the way to win the game.
Danyell Booker led the way in the scoring department for the Toros, dropping 11 points and missed one rebound from a double-double.
Asia Jordan did lead the effort on the glass with 11 boards. The Toros won the rebounding column 41-32.
The Toros hit 37.7 perfect of their shots comparing to the Seawolves' 30.6 percent.
Dominguez Hills will be welcoming Humboldt State to the Torodome Saturday at 1 p.m. Spectators are temporarily suspended from attending the game but can watch the game live on the CCAA Network with Jonah Malkin on the call. The Toros will be welcoming back fans to campus February 3, when they host crosstown rival Cal State LA on the City of Carson Night.
