SAN FRANCISCO – After sitting out the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team returned to the pitch on Friday and opened the 2021 campaign in dominant fashion, shutting out Academy of Art 2-0 in the City by the Bay.
While the score doesn't sound much of a domination, the Toros outshot the Knights 24-5 with a dozen of Dominguez Hills' takes were on goal. Freshman keeper
Ashley Correia only had to make a pair of save to earn her first career shutout.
It only took four minutes into the season to get the first goal.
Patricia Rubio-Martinez launched a corner kick into the box where
Madeleine Simones' shot hit the crossbar and
Taleah Carter scored off the rebound.
It became déjà vu at the start of the second half. The Toros found themselves ahead 2-0 when
Holly Kaemerle crossed it into the box and
Alicia Covarrubias knocked the loose ball into the net.
The Toros will open the home schedule Sunday in non-CCAA action against Cal State San Marcos. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Toro Stadium.
