Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Rick Hoskin

Men's Basketball Beats Rival Cal State LA in Dramatic Fashion

LOS ANGELES – The first meeting between crosstown rivals Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA on a men's basketball court since 2020 will go as a classic.

After the Golden Eagles tied the game for the first time since early in the first half, Chris Seeley was fouled with 1.3 seconds left and made the two free throws that allowed the Toros to escape University Gym with a 74-72 win over the Golden Eagles Saturday evening.

While an old-fashion 3-point play by Andre Ball gave the Toros a 7-6 lead, the Toros would stay in front until there was 14.1 seconds left, when LA's Dominic Escobar made a layup to tie the game. After Coach Steve Becker called a timeout with 10 seconds left, Colten Kresl made one last attempt for the win by shooting from the top of the key. It hit the iron and Seeley was fouled going for the rebound, setting up the game-winning free throws.

The Toros had led by as many as 13 with less than four minutes left in the first period. They took a 36-30 lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles kept the Toros' lead under 10 points the entire second half.

Seeley finished the day with 20 points, Andre Ball had a double-double with 10 points and rebounds each and Hunter Seymour also had 10 points. The Toros recovered from a cold evening at Cal State San Marcos Thursday night by shooting 45 percent against the Golden Eagles.

While the two sides won't see each other until February in the Torodome, the Toros will now turn their focus on their season-long six-game homestand starting with the NAIA's Westcliff in non-conference play Monday at 5 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but Westcliff requested the change to comply with the NAIA's scheduling policy.
