CARSON -- Host and No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills pushed across a pair of second-half goals against No. 5 Sonoma State, advancing to the CCAA men's soccer semifinal next Friday at No. 1 seed and 8th-ranked Cal State LA.
First kick for Friday's CCAA semifinal is set for 7 pm in University Stadium.
Today's match was a reversal of the two teams' earlier meeting in Rohnert Park when the Toros took a 2-0 lead entering halftime. The Seawolves were up to today's challenge, keeping CSUDH off the scoreboard while matching the Toros in shots at six after the first 45 minutes of play.
The scoreboard remained dormant until less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. At the 80:30 mark,
Sulaiman Bah dribbled up the right side of the field, sending a through ball through three Seawolf defenders and past the SSU keeper, where
Michael Vega was waiting at the left side of the net. Collecting the ball, Vega one-timed his shot to the lower left for his first goal of the year, breaking the scoreless tie and lifting a huge weight off CSUDH's shoulders after the Toros had scored just two goals over its last five matches.
Â
That euphoria grew exponentially four minutes later as the Toros doubled the tally. At 84:51,
Alfredo Garcia dribbled towards the Seawolf goal and sent the ball inside the 18 yard mark to a fast-charging Logan Webb, who raced in between and got by two Seawolf defenders. Catching up to the ball 14 yards away from the goal, Webb dribbled 10 yards further to get by SSU's keeper and angled his shot around Reinier Ter Riet for a 2-0 lead, putting the game away.
Â
The Toros outshot the visitors 15-12, with CSUDH keeper
Dylan De Baldo making five saves en route to the shutout win.
Friday's primetime showdown at crosstown rival Cal State LA has huge implications for the Toros as they not only look to avenge a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the Golden Eagles on October 8 that began a three-match skid, but also take another step towards the CCAA Championship, seemingly the only way CSUDH qualifies for the NCAA postseason after ending the regular season dropping four of its final five matches.
CSULA, crowned CCAA Champions for the second-straight season, begin the CCAA tournament winners of three-straight and sporting a 12-2-2 record, including a 6-1-1 record at home.
