SAN MARCOS – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team is now even with Cal State San Marcos.
After CSUSM took the non-conference win in overtime to spoil the CSUDH's home opener in September, the Toros returned the favor Sunday in extra minutes as
Holly Kaemerle converted a successful penalty kick into a golden goal to win 2-1 and spoil the Cougars' senior day and final home match of the 2021 regular season.
The win ended several streaks for the Toros (5-11-0, 2-8-0 CCAA, 6 Pts.) starting with a six-match losing streak. It was also the first time the Toros have scored multiple goals in seven matches.
Dominguez Hills got put on the penalty kick marker in 107
th minute after a Cougar defender fouled in the box attempting to clear a cross. Cougar keeper Allison Marcure guessed wrong and dove in the wrong direction as Kaemerle aimed toward the upper right corner.
Madeleine Simones got the Toros on the board first in the 23
rd minute. As soon as
Patricia Rubio-Martinez took possession on the left side of the goal box, she crossed it to the right post where Simones headed it in.
The Cougars (6-5-3, 2-5-3 CCAA, 9 Pts.) also capitalized on a penalty in the 74
th minute after a tripping foul was called while chasing for a loose ball.
Alyssa Newsom guessed right on Chloe King's shot to the lower left but just slid right under the keeper.
Both teams had nine shots overall while the Toros edged the on-goal column 6-4.
The Toros close out the 2021 season at home against Cal State Monterey Bay on a rare Thursday matinee. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Prior to kickoff, the Toros will honor their 2021 senior class of
Haley McDevitt,
Bella Amezcua,
Kelly Almazan,
Holly Kaemerle and
Madeleine Simones.
