SAN MARCOS – Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer is back in the win column.
And it was needed more than ever.
Six minutes into overtime,
Michael McKibbin had a fastbreak that was broken up by Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Jesus Mentado inside the box, but a charging
Taetum Lopez fired a one-touch shot into an unmanned goal that ricocheted off the crossbar and bounced into the net for a 2-1 overtime win Sunday afternoon.
The Toros snap a three-match losing skid and improve their record to 9-4-1 overall and 7-3-0 in the CCAA for 21 points. After Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay played to a scoreless draw, the Toros leap over the Yotes for third place in the conference table. Dominguez Hills now has a one-point lead over San Bernardino with one match to play.
Because Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona won their respective matches against Humboldt State and Chico State before Dominguez Hills and San Marcos kicked off, the Toros are guaranteed to host a first round match in the CCAA Championship Sunday. The Golden Eagles (28 points) and Broncos (26 points) clinched the magic number of 24 points in order receive a bye into the semifinal round.
The Toros will host Otters to close out the regular season Thursday while the Yotes host the Cougars to determine the third and fourth seed between Dominguez Hills and San Bernardino.
Per CCAA scheduling, all final conference men's soccer matches are to be played at 11:30 a.m. in odd-number years.
Dominguez Hills had to play catchup after Danny Alvarez scored in the 38
th minute. It was four minutes later that the Toros tied the match. Kaufman trapped the ball inside the box but couldn't get a clean shot so he passed to an open
Josue Cartagena for a one-touch blast into the goal.
The Toros had one final chance in regulation with a corner kick. After the ball was sent into the box,
Spencer Myers took one last shot at the top of the key that was blocked by a Cougar defender. The Toros called for a handball but didn't get it.
Before kickoff against the Otters, the Toros will honor its 2021 seniors in
Bryan Rodriguez,
Steven Espinoza, Alberto Carillo and
Josue Cartagena.
