SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino were on their way to playing extra minute until a goal in the 88
th minute propelled the Yotes to a 1-0 win over the Toros in a critical CCAA men's soccer match Friday afternoon.
The Toros, who haven't scored a goal in nearly two weeks, fall to 8-4-1 overall and importantly 6-3-0 in the CCAA. Despite being stuck at 18 points for the last three matches, the Toros did secure a spot to the upcoming CCAA tournament following results around the conference. The Yotes (8-4-2, 6-2-1 CCAA, 19 Pts) leaped over the Toros for third place in the standings. Dominguez Hills still holds on to one of the two spots to host a first-round and leads fifth place Humboldt State, which has 14 points. With No. 8 and CCAA leader Cal State LA out of the Toros' reach, the Toros can only catch up to Cal Poly Pomona for the second spot, which receives a bye into the semifinal.
Only two matches remain in the schedule, a road trip to Cal State San Marcos Sunday at 2 p.m. followed by hosting Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday.
The deciding goal was most certainly earned. Rigo Aguilar took control of the possession from the left side before slotting it into the box where Tony Di Donato took a shot that was just out of Toro keeper Francisco Aguilar's reach.
San Bernardino edged the Toros in shots, 7-5 overall, while it was even at four in the on-goal column.
