CARSON -- No. 8-ranked Cal State LA proved too much to handle in No. 13-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills' first real test of the season, scoring three second-half goals in a span of 14 minutes to take a decisive 3-0 win over the host Toros on the Dignity Health Sports Park's Field 3.
The Toros fall to 8-2-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA, while the Golden Eagles remain perfect in league play at 7-0, and move to 9-2-1 overall.
In a battle pitting schools just 18 miles away, the contest lived up to the hype in the first period, with neither side giving an inch. Tallying a 6-5 shot advantage, however, the Golden Eagles sent four of their shots on frame compared to just one for the Toros, putting pressure on the Cardinal and Gold.
The scoreboard continued to show zeros midway through the second half until CSULA's Eduardo Castellanos broke the scoreless tie at the 71:52 mark.
Looking to take advantage of its new-found momentum, CSULA did just that less than three minutes later as Gonzalo Talavera doubled the score at 74:49. With CSUDH pressing to get on the board, CSULA took advantage 10 minutes later as Lucas Rosales found paydirt, accounting for the match's final tally.
James Vlcek tied for team-high honors with three shots, with one of his attempts on frame.
Senior
Frank Aguilar took the loss, stopping six shots in 90 minutes of action.
The Toros conclude their homestand on Sunday at 5:00 pm, hosting Cal Poly Pomona in the Dignity Health Sports Park's Main Stadium, which took a 2-0 win at Cal State Monterey Bay earlier today.
