Smith Scores 30, Toros Drop Heartbreaker to Monterey Bay

CARSON - With the score even and 0.4 seconds left, Cal State Monterey Bay sank two free throws and senior Wonder Smith's game-winning 3-point attempt missed as Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to the Otters, 74-72, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball matchup, Saturday at the Torodome.
 
CSUDH drops to 10-12 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA, tied with city rival Cal State LA for the eighth and final spot in the standings to go to the conference tourney. The Toros were led by Smith's 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior Colten Kresl added 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. CSUMB (9-14, 6-11 CCAA) was led by Damian Wilson's 22 points.
 
The Toros were up by as much as five points on four different occasions as both teams exchanged buckets for much of the first half. CSUDH held a slight edge, 33-32, at halftime over the Otters with 15 of those points coming from Smith.
 
The Toros scored 26 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half and took a 59-52 lead, their largest of the game. However, CSUMB responded with 15 consecutive points to turn a seven-point deficit to an eight-point lead as CSUDH trailed 67-59.
 
The Toros responded with an 11-2 run of their own, capped off by a 3-pointer from junior Nick Kornieck to take a slight 70-69 advantage. With the game even, 72-72, Smith had the ball taken away from him and CSUDH was forced to foul. The Otters made their two free throws to account for the final score of the game.
 
CSUDH will take on UC San Diego, Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. for its next matchup.
