CARSON –
Pierson Loska hit two home runs on the day but the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team fell victim of the one-run bug again as No. 29 Point Loma took game one 7-6 and game two 4-3 to sweep the final non-conference series of the regular season at Toro Field Saturday.
Game 1 – PLNU 7, CSUDH 6
Although Dominguez Hills had struck first with a run in the first inning, the Sea Lions put up a fight in the middle of the game that forced the Toros to answer back in their half of the frame. After a two-run home run by Point Loma,
Austyn Tengan and
Aaron Greenfield got on base to start off the home half of the fifth and setup a three-run blast by
Pierson Loska to give the Toros a 3-2 lead. The Sea Lions also answered back in the sixth with a three-run inning of their own. Dominguez Hills tied the game in its half of the inning when Tengan found a hole on the left side of the infield to bring home
Jose Jimenez from third.
Both sides would go down without scoring in the seventh, but in the eighth, the Toros broke the ice when
Jeremy Ciolek hit a ball deep into left center to score in Greenfield with a sacrifice fly.
The lead quickly disappeared in the ninth inning when a leadoff double followed by a two-run home run put the Sea Lions ahead 3-2.
Dylan Steen made it through 5.2 on the mound with four strikeouts but was tagged for five runs on seven hits and three walks.
Humberto Chiquito and
Jacob Paradine both threw 1.2 innings of relief. Chiquito tossed a shutout in his time on the bump but Paradine ran into the trouble in the ninth.
Point Loma's starter Nathan Garkow lasted 4.2 innings before turning it over to four different relievers. He surrendered four runs on seven hits and a walk.
Game 2 – PLNU 4, CSUDH 3
While Point Loma jumped ahead 2-0 to start the game, Loska did get one of those runs back with his second home run on the day. The Toros did grab the lead one inning later when Estrada singled and Jimenez doubled to put both of them in scoring position.
Justin Morris brought the tying run in on a groundout and Grant Decatral knocked in Jimenez with an RBI single to right.
After the first inning,
Isaac Mullins went on to put zeros on the board up until the sixth, when back-to-back hits tied the game and a one-out single scored in the go-ahead run and end the southpaw's day. He did strikeout seven and surrended one walk on 97 pitches.
Dominguez Hills did setup a rally in the seventh but was up against daylight. Loska drew a walk to lead off the inning and was subbed in by
Edward Manzo.
Jeremy Ciolek hit a big double to the left field fence that put the winning run on second base. The Sea Lions decided to intentionally walk
Joe Canepa to load the bases and nobody out. But the Toros couldn't get that clutch hit as the next three batters were retired.
The Toros hit the road for the first time this season and will open conference play Friday at Cal State San Marcos. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
