SAN MARCOS – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season with an 8-7 setback to Cal State San Marcos after the Cougars walked off with a solo shot in the ninth inning Friday.
Both sides combined for 20 hits on the afternoon, with the Toros tallying nine. Seven of those nine were for extra base hits, including two-run home runs by
Aaron Greenfield and
Nick Henry.
Tristan Garnett made it into the sixth inning striking out seven. He would surrender six earned runs on eight hits while limiting his walks to just one.
Matt Garcia had a solid outing of relief, throwing 1.2 of shutout ball giving up two hits.
On the other side, Cougar starter Dylan Wannamaker also made it to the sixth, allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks.
The Cougars (2-5, 1-0 CCAA) gathered 11 hits in the game, with Zach Schuberg and Andrew Garcia, who hit the walkoff homer in the ninth, had three knocks each.
Luck continues to not be on Dominguez Hills' (1-6, 0-1 CCAA) side, marking the fourth straight game the Toros have lost by one run. Down by two in the fifth inning,
Aaron Greenfield tied the game with a two-run blast to left, and one inning later, the lineup put together a barrage that saw four runs plated for a 6-2 lead.
Angel Estrada began the momentum with a one-out double down the right field line and
Nick Henry followed with a two-run shot to right center.
Jose Jimenez kept it going with a double to knock out Cougar starting pitcher Dylan Wannamaker. Following a flyout,
Bailey Bordas doubled to right center field that allowed Jimenez to score and a pair of wild pitches brought the second baseman home for the sixth run.
The two sides meet in San Marcos for game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
